Clinique Arago

THE PATIENT JOURNEY

Your arrival at the Arago clinic

Hello and welcome to the Arago clinic. During your stay with us, we will be at your service to provide you with the best possible care and comfort. This starts with the quality of your welcome. Here is some important information and recommendations that we ask you to follow scrupulously. You have just arrived in your room, so make yourself comfortable. A welcome booklet and information videos about your stay will be at your disposal.

For your safety, your identity and the side to be operated on will be checked several times. The following examinations will be carried out according to medical decisions (X-ray, blood test, electrocardiogram). The anaesthetist will visit you the day before your operation, and an assistant will remove your hair. You will also be asked to take a shower, including your hair, with an antiseptic. After the shower, you will be able to put on your own clothes. You will be told the time of your operation in the evening. You should not eat, drink or smoke for at least six hours before the operation.

The day of the operation: Knee replacement

On the day of your operation, you will need to take a second shower and then put on the operating theatre kit that will be provided. Before the operation, you will be welcomed by the operating theatre staff and then taken to the operating theatre. During preparation, we will again check your identity, the nature of the operation and the side to be operated on. Once you are asleep, you will be positioned on the operating table. The skin of the entire lower limb will then be disinfected and the operating drapes will be placed around the site by the surgeon and his assistants.

An incision is made in the anterior part of the knee, the subcutaneous tissue is removed and the joint capsule opened. The patella is then dislocated outwards and the knee exposed for fitting of the prosthesis. Bone cuts are made in the distal part of the femur using special instrumentation to remove worn bone and cartilage. The same operation is repeated on the proximal tibia and patella. Once the bone cuts have been made, the definitive prosthesis is implanted. It consists of three parts: a femoral part, a tibial part and a patellar part. Its stability and mobility are checked at the end of the operation.

After the operation, you will be woken up and taken by the operating team to the recovery room, where you will be monitored for about two hours. As soon as your vital parameters are stable, your state of consciousness satisfactory and your pain under control, you will be taken back to your room. The nurses and orderlies will check your vital signs and start the post-operative treatments prescribed by the anaesthetist. Depending on the time you return from the operating theatre, the physiotherapist will come to your room to explain the first stages of re-education in accordance with the surgeon's instructions, and you will be able to stand up for the first time.

The day of the operation: Hip replacement

On the day of your operation, you should take a second shower and then put on the operating theatre kit that will be provided. Before the operation, you will be welcomed by the operating theatre staff and then taken to the operating theatre for preparation. We will again check your identity, the nature of the operation and the side to be operated on. Once you are asleep, you will be able to position yourself on the operating table. The skin of the entire lower limb will then be removed and the operating drapes will be laid out around the site by the surgeon and his assistants, and the surgery can then begin.

Rehabilitation, care and prevention of dislocation

For hip prostheses, this will consist of getting up and going to bed with the help of the healthy leg for the first few days, walking with the help of two walking sticks and then a walking stick on the opposite side, going up and down stairs, isometric contraction exercises for the motor muscles and understanding movements and positions that present a risk of dislocation.

Rehabilitation with the team of physiotherapists at the Arago private clinic, for knee prostheses, will consist of extension exercises in bed and flexion exercises in a seated position. From the day after the operation, all your meals will be eaten sitting with your knee in flexion. The most important thing is to regain good mobility with as little pain as possible.

Your discharge

When you leave the Arago private clinic, you have two options: return home or stay in a care and rehabilitation centre. If you return home, you will be able to benefit from hospitalisation at home or the return home programme offered by the social security system.

For knee prostheses , physiotherapy sessions and nursing care will be prescribed. The method of discharge to a care centre must be prescribed by a doctor. To return home, you should use your own vehicle. You may, however, take an ambulance, which will be prescribed for you if necessary.

You have just undergone a delicate operation that requires meticulous care and precautions once you have returned home. We therefore recommend that you take the following precautions for 3 weeks after the operation:

-Avoid touching the dressing in place

-Do not touch the scar

-Maintain rigorous daily hygiene, washing your hands after using the toilet and after each meal, changing your clothes regularly, and not undertaking any dirty work (gardening, mechanics, bricklaying, demolition).

-Do not engage in activities with a potential infectious risk, such as raising animals.

To ensure a safe transition between the clinic and your home, we advise you to contact your GP again.

CAUTION: if you notice any redness, swelling, pain or discharge from the wound, contact your surgeon immediately, who will advise you on what to do.
